As administrator, I’d like to pre register a group of members and send them an email with a specially crafted URL that automatically logs them in and takes them to an “Update Profile” page. Is this at all possible? Note: I’m using Solspace’s User module for front-end membership functionality.

You can’t do this without writing a custom add-on (I don’t know of any that currently exist that provide this functionality) - furthermore there are some serious security concerns for allowing a member to be logged with a URL only.

Thank you for posting on the ExpressionEngine forums.
As Phillip mentioned, this is not possible without an add-on and I am unaware of any add-ons that will accomplish a direct login.
The most secure way to accomplish a pre-registration is to sign the user up and send them the login details.
