How to administer non-EE database tables from EE Admin?

I have legacy database tables for which I do not want to transfer the data to the EE channel structure, or any other built-in EE module.  However, it would be very helpful to allow such data to be updated, created, edited, etc. from EE Admin.

Is there a plugin or module that you know of that would allow functionality similar to the channel ‘Content > Publish’ and ‘Content > Edit’ in EE Admin?

Such an add-on would need a method to associate an arbitrary DB table to something akin to a channel, and the columns in such a table to something akin to channel fields.

Thanks for any help or pointers, and sorry if this sort of question is not appropriate for this forum—I didn’t see a better alternative.

    Hi neuralynx,

I don’t know if it will get you exactly what you are looking for, but External Entries offers the ability to connect to MySQL databases outside of ExpressionEngine, but operating through ExpressionEngine templates. It wouldn’t be via the Control Panel, but you could restrict access to those templates based on Member Group.

If that isn’t right for you, you might look into developing your own add-on to accomplish this.

    Cheers!
