    Hi,

I am new to Expression Engine. I am trying to develop a small website with a small forum for hobbyists in my country. This is not a commercial application. I had an EE 1.x license for a couple of years but I did not used it. Now, the idea is back in my attention and I have upgraded EE 1.x to EE 2.x. I also bought the forum module and I have also made an account with enginehosting.com I now I want to learn how to build this website.

I am an IT person (working with Oracle databases) but I have never developed a website, so I am a beginner. I have bought the following books/screencasts:

    - Head First HTML with CSSX by Elisabeth and Eric Freeman (for the HTML/CSS) part

    - Learning ExpressionEngine by Ryan Irelan (screencasts)
    - Expression Engine 2 A Qucik-Start Guide by Ryan Irelan (pdf)
    - Building an ExpressionEngine 2 Site by Michael Boyink (pdf)
    - Building Websites with ExpressionEngine 2 by Leonard Murphy (pdf)

that’s basically all of the books I could find. I guess I shopped too much 😊)

My question is, which of the EE books to start with? Can I start with the EE books and learn the HTML/CSS in parallel? I am asking as I want to shorten the time to get the skills as quick as possible.

    Thanks,
    Codrut

    Hi Codrut,

Welcome to the community! I think you’ll enjoy using the software to build a site.

If you’re not at all familiar with HTML and CSS, you might want to spend a little time becoming familiar with both before moving into EE. To follow my book and screencasts you don’t have to know any HTML or CSS but it might make working inside of the provided templates a little easier.

That being said, you might just want to jump in with the videos or book first and see how you do. However, the HTML and CSS knowledge will be needed when you move beyond the example sites and want to start building your own HTML and CSS templates for you own site.

    Hope that helps!

    Cheers,

    Ryan Irelan

There’s a pretty solid HTML/CSS tutorial on NetTuts that walks through the build of an entire demo site that would give you a good foundation on the design and markup component. NetTuts has a bunch of tutorials that you may find useful - they even have couple of EE tutorials on specific topics.

It’s definitely better to have a solid grasp of that before getting too deep into EE - simply because EE is essentially a layer on top of the site to take the content blocks in the design and make them dynamic.

There’s also the various learning resources from A Book Apart that walk through HTML, CSS and more.  I found them extremely well thought out.

The video tutorials from Mijingo and Train-ee are the two go-to resources I would recommend as well - both provide in-depth coverage of the main concepts you need to understand about EE once you have your HTML/CSS foundation.

I have the same list of stuff you have (minus the CSS + HTML book).

I would recommend learning your CSS and HTML thoroughly first. Build your static site templates, of the site you want to build in EE, as a project.

Then I’d sit back and watch the MIJINGO screencasts - this gave me a great overview and grasp of EE and how it worked.

you can start from website like weebly.com or ning.com.

but I am highly recommend "wix.com"

after registration you can choose category for website like: business, Art, Photography, e-commerce, And you will find many templates in each category. try it.
