Explorer crashes and doesn’t let you read long URLs (thanks to the new tab system).  Chrome tries to be too clever (try right clicking on an image and you’ll know what I mean), Safari is too “Apply” (doesn’t represent how most people experience the web).  As for Mozilla Firefox?  Well, if you like hanging around waiting for updates to install then you’re in for fun with that one!

Folks, as far as I can tell this is just a bad time for browsers - especially if you happen to be a web developer.

I’ve had a look around and as far as I can tell Opera is the only major browser left that’s behaving… well… like a normal browser.  Has anyone else had the same experience?

Opera has tons of legacy UI baggage. It doesn’t work well with 3rd party apps (from file manager to password managers to even just remember what program was supposed to open a certain file type). It doesn’t have as good development tools as FF/Chrome/Safari. Its vast main UI customization often breaks when you deviate from the default.

It’s fast and better than IE for sure but other than that I see no real reason to choose it over Chrome or FF. Both are easier to use and better supported. As for Safari, it represents how people experience the web just fine. It is after all just a browser.

Opera is alright but it is more than a browser surely? Especially considering it has an email client and torrent manager built in? I find the Opera debug tools horrid. I don’t find Opera particularly fast. I also find the UI kinda ugly. It also has been a bit hit and miss with implementing html5 / css3 features. I don’t dislike Opera. I just don’t particularly like it either.

I currently use Safari. It’s compact, its simple and it isn’t drowned in what I perceive to be ‘app nonsense’. The debug tools work alright and the browser hardly ever crashes. It just seems well suited to what I need.

If you want the worst browser you should check out safari on iPad. Even IE6 is better.

    Thanks for the responses.

As far as I can tell there’s no clear right or wrong answers to the “which is the best browser?” question.

Lately, I’ve came to the conclusion that it’s Opera and I was curious to find out if I’m the only person on Earth who has reached this conclusion.  But even Opera isn’t perfect - no doubt about it.

I’ve taken on board your points.  Google Chrome does seem to be good and Safari looks good too.  Safari has a poor history of displaying websites radically different from everyone else so that makes me nervous about using it.  However, maybe that’s a problem that they’ve got over.  I have no idea.

At first I didn’t like the way Chrome behaves when you right clicked on pictures and hit ‘inspect element’.  But as time’s going on I’m starting to appreciate it.

Thanks again for the feedback.  I’m only trying to exchange some thoughts with you guys.

Was a die-hard Firefox junkie. I mean *bad*. One day it finally just became too slow to tolerate and I switched to Chrome. After a few days of getting used to it, I never looked back. Lightning fast, easy to extend, developer tools are excellent, etc.

Aside from testing in all major browsers, Chrome is the only browser I use.

P.S. Yes, Firefox updating every other day got old too.
