    This question may be related to a resolved thread.

    v2.3.1 - Build 20111017, Although the above topic covers the same problem that I’m having with a local install, I don’t believe that the reason that I’m unable to publish is the same. As in that related issue, every time I try to publish an entry, I receive this error message: “The article entry field is required.” If anyone has had the same problem with a local Mamp install and knows how to troubleshoot it, I’d appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

    Hi fin,

    Let’s see if we can get this cleared up! Do you have a field named “article entry”? If you have that field marked as required when you set up the field group, ExpressionEngine will expect there to be something in that field before allowing a entry to go through. You can change this if you navigate to Admin-> Channel Administration-> Channel Fields. Select the field group then the field in question, make sure that “Is this a required field?” is set to “No”.

    If that’s not the case, let us know.

    Only one slight correction to my original post, the field is called “article excerpt”. Yes, I’m adding content to those fields. Yes, I should have mentioned that I tried setting all the fields “to not required.” By setting the fields to “not required”, one of the fields did show that content in view entry and the other field didn’t except the content. In other words, one worked and the other didn’t.

    In the instances where the field does not accept the content, what is special about the content you are trying to post? Can you outline the differences between content that is accepted and content that is rejected? Are you trying to submit special characters or anything else that might cause some trouble? What kind of field is it that is giving this error? As much context as possible about surrounding when an entry is rejected will help us troubleshoot this.

    Thanks!

    Dan, thanks for the reply, I’m providing a screen shot of an entry. Nothing about these characters is unusual in my experience. I’m not adding any html entities. In order to test these fields, I submitting exactly the same content. Both fields have been set up identically for testing purposes. When I set one to required or not required-to troubleshoot the issue-I set the other the same way. Thanks again.

    OK,
    Let’s get a little deeper on this. What version of PHP and MySQL are you running with your MAMP install? Can you open your admin.php file around line 66 change $debug to 1:

    $debug = 1;

    That will force the display of any PHP errors that may give us further clues.

    Dan, I’m running 5.3.5. As you said, I changed that line of code. No, php errors have occurred.

    With debug set to 1, are there any errors generated if you change the “required” status of the field?

    Do you have a lot of content in the channel that you are trying to submit to? Would you be able to delete these fields and recreate them without much headache? Do you have any add-ons running, specifically any third-party field types that need to be updated? I know you are using standard textarea fields here, but I just want to make sure there aren’t any potential conflicts.
