I’ve changed hosts and started a whole new blog using v2.3 instead of the v1.6 used on the old site. Although I do not want to recreate the old site, I would like to be able to insert many of the entries from my old blog into the new blog. What is the best way to do this?

Can I run the sql generated from the old system exports to insert the articles into the new system. I would run the inserts for exp_weblog_date.sql and exp_weblog_titles.sql. I know I would need to edit the table names etc, but my question is, would this work? Would I need to do much else? Again, I am only interested in bringing over my articles—not the rest of the site.

    Hi, Chris -

The best way would have been to upgrade the EE 1 site.

How many entries are you talking about?  It’s going to be either copy/paste or exporting using a template and importing using something like the third-party DataGrab.

The database underwent a few too many changes for the kind of export/import you describe.

    Thanks Lisa.

I have over 400 articles to enter, many of which are pretty long.

I installed 2.3 direcrtly on the new host, rather than upgrading then converting vecause the upgrade process wasn’t working well for me and my time was limited. I can restore the old articles at my leisure.

Final question: does a publish touch more than just the title and the data tables? If so, than I will have to go the cut and paste route. However, if there are only those two tables being touched, or just a few more, I could write or rework the queries myself and insert them directly into the mysql db.

    Hi Chris,

Final question: does a publish touch more than just the title and the data tables? If so, than I will have to go the cut and paste route. Yes there are more tables touched and would recommend not going down the copy and paste route. Using an add-on like DataGrab would be your best best here. Create a template in your old site to export entries as XML or similar and save as a file. Then import them via DataGrab on your new site. It’s fast and efficient and goes a long way to prevent data corruption by using a manual method.

    Hope that helps?
