I’m probably just being really silly here or it’s a mix of being exceptionally tired but when I try to create a new Publish Layout and save it then it doesn’t save. I get no notification at the top of the Control Panel telling me the layout has been updated and upon refreshing the publish page again all the fields are back on the page again.

I just updated the site to the latest version 2.3.1 (20111017) to try and fix this and the problem still exists. Tried disabling extensions to ensure nothing is playing with the Publish page at all and still having the same problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As a quick update one thing I have noticed is that in a brand new install of 2.3.1 the Save Layout button is red yet in this install the button is blue. Images attached showing both.

Never mind. After 6 hours of messing around with every single preference I could find and finding that nothing was wrong with ExpressionEngine I then tried Firebug and saw that the system was getting a 412 (Precondition Failed) message so looks like this was a mod_security issue.

Strange though as the site was working fine before today so will get in touch with the host to see what’s going on here. I’m guessing some new mod_security rule is being hit here so will try to find out what it is if possible as I’m guessing this could affect a lot of sites at some point or another. Easy enough to get around it with a line in .htaccess but a pain if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

Thanks for updating us on the cause, Mark. Let us know if it turns out to be something in EE that we should be on the lookout for with regards to everyone running a basic mod_security setup.

    Thanks again!
