We have two EE sites, DC and Chicago. I would like for all our writers to have the automatic time stamps on their posts reflect where they are. So when a DC writer writes a post, the time of the post is automatically set to East Coast time, and when a Chicago writer writes a post, the time is Central.

Can someone please tell me how to do this? I have played around with the members’ time zones (under his/her Localization Settings), but this setting doesn’t appear to have any effect.

I’m at a loss. Any help appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Will

    Hi Will,

The localization for each member only affects the display of times across the site for that particular user. EE stores times in the database according to UTC, so they’re all based on the same timezone. It then localizes the times based on the user viewing the site. Users logged into their own accounts can set their own timezone in order to see times relative to their location, and you can alter the times for the viewers of your site that aren’t logged in by navigating to Admin > Localization Settings in the CP.

That’s the key for you. For each site, you need to visit that preferences screen in the CP and set the timezone for each of your MSM sites according to their location.

    Does that help?

    Kevin,

    Thanks for the reply.

I think you mean the Server Time Zone under Admin -> System Preference -> Localization Settings? I have set that to Eastern time for the DC site and Central time for the Chicago site, and it appears to be working.

I guess the reason I didn’t use this setting before was because I thought Server Time Zone meant I should set it to the time zone for where the server is physically located. Since our web host is located in Minnesota, I had it set to Central time for both sites. Now that I realize the setting is really asking where the time zone is of the site, not the physical server, I think I’m good.

Please correct me if I’m wrong.

    Thanks again,
    Will
