I followed the steps in Updating from a Previous Version of ExpressionEngine in order to upgrade from 2.2.1 to 2.3.1 and visited admin.php (in Step 5) expecting the upgrade wizard to show up. Instead, the following error was displayed:

    Patch unsuccessful!

This patch cannot be applied to ExpressionEngine versions older than 2.3.0.

Please do a full upgrade to version 2.3.1 or contact tech support for more information.

There’s nothing on the page linked above stating that “updating from a previous version” does not apply 2.2.x, nor can I find any other instructions on how to complete “a full upgrade.” I looked for a way to download 2.2.2 or 2.3.0 and didn’t find that either. What am I missing, and what’s the correct way to upgrade from 2.2.1 to 2.3.1? Thanks.

Looks like I mistakenly left out the system/installer folder as in this thread. Dumb mistake, but with more than one person posting about the same thing within 24 hours I wonder if the documentation should include a note that says system/installer must be included for upgrades. My assumption was that this was for initial installs, and that since the folder didn’t exist on the server it probably didn’t need to be replaced. Or maybe I’m just trying to save face. 😉

Hi, Todd. The instructions say to unzip the files to your hard drive, then FTP them up. I’ll mention to Brandon that it wouldn’t hurt to make that very obvious in the instructions.

In the meantime, closing the thread. Feel free to start a new thread if you have any more questions.
