client portal

This is more of a general question as I am seeking direction and was hoping someone in the community might have some helpful information.

I was tasked with building a client portal using EE.  I have been building this on the front end largely with the help of the User module, treating it almost like a social network. The reasoning for this is that it is to look like, or at least have a similar look and feel to our current site.

I am having problems with the whole management of assets for front end users. allowing users to upload to their own directories and the ability to see this in a file tree format.

I assume I could get the desired functionality from just giving these users control panel access which would solve the problem of asset management, but I don’t understand how I would go about creating or editing the cp to look like our site - I dont just want to skin with some colors, I am looking to change the layout of items which is why I assumed I would be forced to solve this on the front end.

Any direction would be appreciated, I’m a bit lost as to which way to move here.  Thanks.

    Bewoldt2,

There are some modules which may make things simpler for you such as the built-in Safecracker (http://ellislab.com/expressionengine/user-guide/modules/safecracker/index.html) or using Pixel & Tonic’s Wygwam and Assets, possibly a few others you can find on http://www.devot-ee.com - I would begin with that and see if they can meet your specifications. I hope that helps.

I have used wygwam and thought assets would be nice if I allow the client to the CP, the problem I have with that is the lack of ability to customize the CP to reflect our current site.

Which is what led me to the front end.  To my knowledge the logged in user cannot access Assets from the front end, is this correct?  I was under the impression the user need to be logged into CP to use this module.

    Thanks for the assist, Brandon.

Bewoldt2, since you’re inquiring about the functionality of third party addons, I’m going to move this to the Community Help forum for additional community support.

wow that just opened up a whole new world to me.  Never knew any of that was possible.  I had mistakenly thought safecracker was an alternative to freeform.  I never knew you could put back-end publishing forms on the front end like that.  Thanks for all or your help. I really appreciate all of your help I think this is exactly what I was looking for and the direction I needed.  Phenomenal, thanks for all your help!
