Problem with automatic URL creation

I have a website that has a weblog set up to store forthcoming events. Frequently the events have the same title, just a different date or description. So I’ve been inputting these fine, until recently, when I got the error “An entry already exists with this URL title. URL titles must be unique.”. Now this is strange, as I always leave the URL title blank, and it creates on for me. It always adds an incremental number on the end.

The last one was (page title)48, but after 48 it doesn’t work. Any idea what’s causing this? It’s a real pain to enter a manual URL title each time, and remember which numbers have already been used.

Often if it is an event, though not the perfect solution, if there will be same titles but the only difference is the date or desc, I would use url title is (event-page-title)-yyyy-mm or some variation like that.  But yeah, I would manually add onto the URL Title so it doesn’t use auto-added numbers as then it would have no meaning for me.

    Hi Nightshade,

What version and build of EE are you using?
I remember there being a limit to the auto-increment on a URL title

    Hi it’s version 1.6.8

If I could have EE generate the URL titles in the format (event-page-title)-yyyy-mm-dd that would totally fix the issue - it is possible to easily change how the URL titles are generated?

    Hi Nightshade,

There’s nothing native that allows you to auto-generate URL titles with patterns other than the Title field, but MX Title Control does. Looks like it’ll help you avoid that limit!

Does that help take care of things for you?

    Hi Kevin

I tried that extension out, it looks to do everything I need, BUT in the extension for EE v1, you can only change the title label for the edit page, and not the URL title field as you can with the EE v2 version! Very frustrating! I don’t think it’s possible…

    Hi Nightshade,

if you wish I can move this thread to the Community Help forum so to open up your topic to more members?

I cant think of anything practical for you unfortunately unless you were to manually add the date to each URL title field after the title itself
