Best way to display Related Entries

I am looking for the best way to display Related Entries from two different channels under separate headings.

My page will have a article as the main content and in the sidebar under one heading I will list 4/5 related articles (from the same channel) and under a separate heading further down the sidebar I will list 4/5 related FAQs (from the ‘FAQ’ channel).

Ideally I would like to manually choose the related articles but have it automatically choose the related FAQs.

From what I can find I could use Solspace’s Tag module or Pixel and Tonic’s Playa module (can’t figure out if I can split the related entries into 2 lists). However, I’m not sure which is the best for the job or maybe there is a better method.

Tag – would be based on keywords. As new articles/faqs are added would automatically update results based new entries keywords.

Playa – I would need to choose the related entries? Could it be set up so that I choose the related articles manually but related faqs are chosen by keywords so as I add more faqs they are updated automatically? This wouldn’t be an issue for articles as they are largely fixed.

I could have posted this question separately on the different support forums for Solspace and P&T but wanted to reach a wider EE userbase, hence I posted it here and to save me duplicating the same post in multiple places.

    Any thoughts/views/assistance is much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi Euan,

You’re correct, with Playa you manually choose which entries are related, and Tag will dynamically assign related entries based on similar tags.

If you really want to have one list be manually curated, and the other to be auto generated, you’re probably going to need to just buy both products.

    Brandon,

    Thanks for reply so quickly.

In terms of Playa, could I use it and choose both entries for both lists manually and then use Playa tags to split the entries I’ve chosen according to which channel they are from?

    Many thanks

You could do that, but it might make more sense to just have two separate Playa fields, each set to pull entries from different channels.

Ah right - sorry didn’t realise I could have multiple Playa fields. That indeed would make much more sense.
