    Hi,

I keep receiving various database connection errors on a recent EE install. I have received this error:

Unable to connect to your database server using the provided settings.
    Filename: core/EE_Config.php
    Line Number: 172

    and this one:

    Error Number 2006
    MySQL server has gone away
INSERT INTO exp_security_hashes (date, ip_address, hash) VALUES (UNIX_TIMESTAMP())....
    Filename: libraries/Cp.php
    Line Number: 728

I do have the system folder renamed and installed above webroot, but I have run both the EE server wizard and tested my database login with dbtest.php and both come back completely valid. If I refresh the error page, the correct behavior resumes.

    Running 2.2.2 Build date: 20110801

Could help me identify what I might have missed? Or offer other troubleshooting techniques for this issue? Thanks!

    Hi Shellster,

At what point do you get these error messages? Do they happen all the while or just with certain operations on the site?

The second error saying that the MySQL server has gone away is possibly a server related issue. If you could get in touch with your host to see if there is anything wrong on that side of things as they would know best about that kind of thing.

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Hi Mark,

I am getting these errors while attempting to login to the EE CP and while performing multiple actions within the CP. Most of the errors come while navigating to a channel entry to edit or publish new content, and while editing and/or saving templates via the CP. So basically anything that involves reading or writing to the DB. 😖

I checked with the host over the weekend and they did indeed have issues with the server’s RAM sticks and MySQL setup, but as of yesterday that has been resolved on their end and I no longer receive the “MySQL has gone away” error - I am mostly getting the database config and lost connection errors.

I also verified that I am using the correct credentials to connect to the DB in my database.php, and that the MySQL user has all permissions granted.

What is the next step in troubleshooting this issue? Thanks!

    Hi Shellster,

Could you possibly try out the system > expressionengine > utilities > db_test.php file please.

You will need to open that up and change the variables at the top of the file to test it but that should then give you some information. If you could post what happens when you run that file please.

    Thanks,

    Mark

I too have the following error

    A Database Error Occurred
Unable to connect to your database server using the provided settings.

    Filename: core/EE_Config.php

    Line Number: 172

The site was working fine. I was only authoring CSS reloaded the page and then saw this error.

    Please advise?

hungrysquirrel, was it a momentary blip or is the site down.  A momentary blip can occur- just means the DB server was unable to respond which may happen, though it should be infrequent (and is more an issue for the host than EE/software).  If it’s still down or happening a lot, that’s another matter entirely.  First we’d want to make sure it’s not the settings in the config (which it shouldn’t be, since they were working) and then we’d want to contact the host and see if the DB server is down or going up/down and why.

    Make sense?

    Hi Robin,

Sorry for the delay, Google’s two step verification backfired on me and I can’t get into my gmail on desktop, only mobile :(
Anyways, it turned out it was an odd hosting issue but everything seems to have cleared up. Thank you for checking in on me.

No worries!  Just glad it was a blip and you’re good to go now.  Run into any more issues, just let us know!
