Is this a "Basepath to Template File Directory" problem?

I’m new to this - very new. I’m using Ryan Irelan’s screencast series—I’m on Lesson 1.

I have a site.group/index.html page. I can update it in my EE Console and it looks like all is okay. But in viewing it online, there is no change. I can go into the html file and see that it looks current, but the website doesn’t see any update.

    - How do I know if this is a Basepath to Template File Directory issue?
    - How do I know if the Basepath to Template File Directory is correct?

Also, when I click on “CP Home” on the console menu tab, I get a 404 error. I’m thinking the basepath is wrong, but how will I verify if I get it right?

(I noticed on the screencast the basepath was pre-populated. Mine was blank. Is that indicative of a problem?)

    Hi M-Hickcox,
No worries on being new 😊 and beginnings are always little rough.
The fact that you are getting 404 within CP means that something is not set right under your Admin -> General Configuration page. Can you share what settings you have in there?

When you say “I can update it in my EE Console…” are we talking about editing templates or making content entries?

    lebisol -

Thanks for jumping in! I still have a problem, but have more info on it now.

But first - I found a hint on the EE site on finding your basepath to templates. I tried it, it worked fine, and now when I click on the CP home tab, it works. I’m assumiing that means the path is good. (Alhough I could be wrong.)

Continuing problem. I can update my site.group index.html - and then go with FTP and check on it, and the changes are made. But when I go to my website homepage, and look at the source files, I see the system is not finding the new material.

It could be in the way the system saves the files.

    Here’s my themes path:
    /home2/hickcoxu/public_html/soundtheology/themes/

    Here’s my basepath to templates:
    /home2/hickcoxu/public_html/soundtheology/st-system/expressionengine/templates/default_site

But when I save a template in the system, it adds another layer. It saves to:
    /home2/hickcoxu/public_html/soundtheology/st-system/expressionengine/templates/default_site/default_site/

Yes, it adds a “default_site” folder under the “default_site” folder, and then site.group under that. But in looking at the homepage online, it apparently doesn’t find it, showing and old version from - I don’t know where.

    Thoughts?

Update - progress, but not success. I removed “default_site” from the end of the basepath. Now it looks like this:

    Here’s my basepath to templates:
    /home2/hickcoxu/public_html/soundtheology/st-system/expressionengine/templates

and now when I save a template in the system, it adds default_site (I don’t know how it knows that.) So now it saves to:
    /home2/hickcoxu/public_html/soundtheology/st-system/expressionengine/templates/default_site/

As far as I can tell, that’s all good. But on the website, it still finds and old file and doesn’t show the updated one.

    ???

    Success—

Thanks - you asked the question that got me into the right path of inquiry.

The page I see onlne now follows the updates I do in the system.
    Yeah!

With EE you have a choice to ‘save templates as files’ or have them stored in database as a record.

Sounds like you are wanting to use templates as files and might be missing a setting on:
    ———————————————————————————————————
CP Home > Design > Template Manager > Global Template Preference
[x] Allow Templates to be Saved as Files?
    ———————————————————————————————————
Here you will also find a hint to where these files are being stored.

If you use ‘templates as file’s make sure you don’t edit them through CP afterward or they will overwrite whatever work you put in thought manually editing them and then ftp-ing.

Nice, you posted little quicker than my followup but sounds like you are set. 😉
