I’ve been testing the RSS feed on my local environment, and in particular I’m viewing the feed with Safari 5.1’s feed reader. It works great.

However, on my live environment I’m getting a “Safari can’t open the page” error message when trying to view the feed.

Strangely enough, I can use Firefox’s feed reader on both my local and live environments.

I’m concerned something is wrong. Any ideas why Safari wouldn’t be working?

Is there perhaps some server configuring I need to do? I think I read something about document headers ...

    Hi Josephs,

You mention that you tried this out on a localhost install and it all works fine in Safari but then when you move across to your live server it isn’t.

That tells me that it can work with Safari so the issue must lie somewhere else on this one.

When you are testing on your live server you’re not trying to use an RSS feed which is pointing to your localhost are you?

    Thanks,

    Mark

G’day Mark, thanks for the reply.

Safari has it’s own in-browser feed reeder. When Safari detects a <link rel=“alternate”> in the document it displays a small RSS icon in the address bar, when the user clicks on it, it loads the feed to displays in Safari’s feed reader.

When you are testing on your live server you’re not trying to use an RSS feed which is pointing to your localhost are you?

When I access the (local) feed on my local environment, Safari displays the feed entries.

However, when I access the (live) feed on my actual live environment, Safari displays a page error.

The local and live templates are exactly the same, so they should both work.

I wonder why Safari won’t load my live feed?

So the answer is; I had my system turned off.

Feeds obviously don’t see user sessions.

Although I could see my website when logged in, feeds won’t work until the system is turned on.

    Hi Josephs,

Aha! That would be it yes 😉

Glad you got this one sorted. I was starting to wonder myself what it might be.

If anything else crops up then please don’t hesitate to post again as needed.

    Cheers,

    Mark
