I am new to EE and really struggling. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I need to create a site for a school that will have each teacher having their own wiki. Students need to be allowed to post to that wiki and the teacher moderate it. Any thoughts on the best way to go about it. Can one install have that many wikis?

Each teacher also needs their own blog and rss feed. Is that possible with one install?

Any way to allow them to register and spawn the creation of their blogs, feeds or wikis or must that be done manually? I am talking about over 1000 to create.

    Thanks,

    Hello mxchic!

Welcome to the Forums and thanks for choosing ExpressionEngine!

ExpressionEngine is usually only limited by the server and database it runs on. With enough database storage, it can handle quite a lot.

I’ve never used the wiki module, so I don’t know if you would make a wiki for each teacher (although entirely possible) or manage 1 wiki based on pages, categories and authors.

Blogs are an entirely different beast, and I am considerably more familiar with that. You could accomplish this with 1 EE Channel. You would structure that Channels fields to your liking, and then allow users in the Teachers member group to publish and edit in that channel. ExpressionEngine would automatically manage who authored the entries and templates could be made to show entries by a particular teacher, giving the impression of a dedicated “blog”.

Let us know if you have any further questions!

    Cheers,

Thanks for your reply. The wiki piece is needed so the kids can collaborate on assignments. I think the blog can be handled via channels. I will tinker around with it and see. Setting up the members is going to be a bear!

    Hi, mxchic,

This is wavering very close to being against the terms of service, as a hosted blogging system. You can use multiple wikis, but there is nothing built into the system to automate creating a new wiki. How many teachers are there?

Which part is against the terms of service the wikis or blogs? There are about 1000 teachers. If we need to find a new system please let us know and we will look for something to suit that need.

    Thanks,

    Hi, mxchic.

Both, actually. You can scale a single channel to work with multiple authors, but not a 1000 individual wikis.

Sadly I don’t think this will scale well for you. You may want to consider going with a different solution..

Or perhaps just a rethink about how to go about it.. what needs to be the result of the wiki collaboration? Might a channel entry work?

Yes I think a channel may be an option. Dan had suggested the same thing. I think I need to get a little more familiar with the program before I decide exactly what to do.

    Thanks!

Sounds good. I’m going to close this particular thread in the mean time, feel free to ask more questions as you consider your options.
