File syncronization failing because of thumbnail directory

So recently I upgraded to 2.2.2 from 1.6.4 and I am trying to synchronize my files and I have the images folder and all enclosed items set to CHMOD 777.

Every time I try to synchronize my files I get the following error for each image in the gallery:

Thumbnail could not be created for the image. Please make sure the thumbnail directory is writable.

If there is no _thumb folder it creates it, but the CHMOD is 755. If I change it to 777 and try to resync I get the same error again.

Any help would be useful. I’ve lost a lot of data in the upgrade and would appreciate the upgraded file manager to help get my galleries back.

    Thanks,
    Allan

    Hi, Allan.

Is the image folder that is in use right now set to 777? What kind of hosting do you have? We’ve seen a few hosts that have these sort of problems.

The image folder and all enclosed files and folders of the directory are 777. My hosting is Media Temple.

OK, which flavor of MediaTemple? I don’t have this issue on my MT GS installs.

However, MT just started having some issues yesterday, not sure if what you’re describing goes with it.

My apologies. I am actually looking at a Rackspace Cloud Site.

Could it actually be that the sync is using a PHP technology that isn’t available on my server?

Yes, that was the issue! The protocol in the Image resizing preferences was set to imageMagick, which is resident on my server but doesn’t quite work right. Changed it to GD2 and now it is working fine. You can marked this issue closed.
