    Hi there,

For some reason I am not permitted to associate a new or existing Channel Entry with an already existing Forum Topic.

The only time I can successfully do this is upon the first “submit” or “save” of the Channel Entry.

In other words, the Channel Entry must be brand-spanking new.  Only at this point does the Forum tab offer multiple options:

    Forum Topic Title
    Forum Topic Text
    Forum
    Forum Topic ID

If I don’t make the association at this point and BEFORE I hit “submit” for the first time, the only option that presents itself moving forward is:

    Forum Topic ID

And I am no longer permitted to associate the Entry with a Forum Topic.

if I enter the Forum Topic ID in the field and hit “submit.”  It just doesn’t seem to take.

    Should this be the case?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi cacmpbell,

I can confirm that this does indeed happen however if memory serves me correctly I believe this may well be the correct operation of that function. Let me ask the rest of the crew about this to get a bit more clarification on it and perhaps an explanation as to why this happens / works that way and I’ll let you know as soon as I have any more information on this.

    Thanks.

    Hi cacampbell,

Apologies on this one. I’d misread exactly what you were having issues with here. I had read it that you were wanting to make a new forum entry with an existing channel entry but I now see that what is happening is you were trying to associate an entry with an existing forum thread.

You said above that it “doesn’t seem to take”. Could you possibly expand on this a little and let me know exactly what does / doesn’t happen?

Also what exactly are you typing into the Forum Topic ID field? This should just be a number and if you visit one of your forum threads such as :

    http://www.example.com/forums/viewthread/12837
(Ensure you are visiting a page which says viewthread in it)

12837 is what you would type into the field there.

    You said above :

I am not permitted to associate a new channel entry…

    and then :

The only time I can successfully do this is upon the first “submit” or “save” of the Channel Entry.

These two sentences seem to contradict each other so I just wanted to make absolute sure of what is going on here.

    Thanks.

Sorry Mark, I will clarify the issue.

If I want to associate a NEW Channel Entry with a Forum Topic - I must do it at the initial creation of the NEW Channel Entry.

If I do not take the opportunity to add the details of the Forum Topic to the NEW Channel Entry before I hit ‘submit’ for the first time, I lose the opportunity to do it in the future.

The “Edit Entry” page will give me the option to add a Forum Topic ID at a later date, however when I add the number of the Forum Topic ID, it will simply not associate the Channel Entry - it just doesn’t seem to link the two.

    Hi cacampbell,

When you get the ID of the forum thread are you on a page such as :

    http://www.example.com/index.php/forums/viewthread/3/

Viewthread being the important part here.

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Yes, this is the case.

In the example you outline above, I would enter “3” in the Forum Topic ID field.

However, it doesn’t seem to work.

    Hi cacampbell,

Can you clarify what you mean when you say it doesn’t work? You said above that it doesn’t associate the two. In what way do you mean?

Does the number submit and get stored when you save the entry?

    Thanks,

    Mark

You nailed it, the number I submit does not get stored in the entry.

The entry field remains blank after saving it.

    Hi cacampbell,

I just realised that I didn’t ask earlier on which version of ExpressionEngine you are running. Is it 2.1.3 as per your signature?

You may well be being bitten by this bug in 2.1.3.

There is a hot-fix in that bug report which you might like to try although if you can do so then I would advise upgrading to the latest version of ExpressionEngine.

    Does that help?

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Ah ha!

I appears as though this is exactly the case! I will update my version of EE as I am currently running 2.1.3.

Thank you, I will let you know how it goes.

No problem. Just let us know how it goes.

Hopefully that will fix you up on this.

I’ll leave this thread open for now but if you can let us know if it works by posting back here again then that would be great, thanks.
