    I followed the instructions under #1 - Prepare and Back-up @ http://ellislab.com/expressionengine/user-guide/installation/update.html

    Take Your Site Offline
It is recommended that you take your site offline for the duration of the update so that people visiting your site won’t see any PHP errors or other anomalies that may occur while you are uploading files. Here is one approach:
        1. Copy system/expressionengine/utilities/offline.html to your web root folder (the same place you have your main index.php file).
        2. Rename offline.html to index.html. Now your visitors will see the “offline” page while you update your site.

While the files were being uploaded I checked the site and was surprised to not see my offline file.  Initially I got the Error below and after a bit the page was just blank.

    An Error Was Encountered
Unable to load the requested language file: language/english/dry_accessible_captcha_lang.php

Doesn’t the browser look for index.html before index.php? If both are present which one takes precedence?

    thanks for the info!

    Hi AAR,

It depends on your hosting plan, you may need to make an .htaccess file to allow for index.html to be processed first.

    Try adding:

    DirectoryIndex index.html index.php

    Does that help?
