Just wondering about some conceptual issues - I’ve got a few options on how I can solve it bu just wanted a second opinion.

    - Can you change upload directories of a file once you’ve uploaded it? Can’t see a way to do this
    - Can you find the path to a file from the file manager, so you can paste the path into an entry? This needs to be easy enough for a client (eg not having to go into upload prefs). If not, then this should be added.
    - Whats the best way for clients to upload files into a textarea. Clients obviously cant be expected to type in a filepath. And having a custom file field doesn’t work in this case (since only one entry may use it, and have more than one file). Even wygwam doesn’t completely solve this, since you have to tell wygwam to use a single upload directory in the settings (and you may want to keep files/images separate).

    Thanks

Not currently in the File Manager, but this would be a good time for a feature request since the File Manager is still undergoing development.

Currently, the recommended way for CP users to include images in their entries is to use either the File fieldtype or the img button on the Textarea fieldtype. Either way, you’re presented with a GUI to select existing files or upload a new one.

Being able to select the full path to the file within the File Manager does sound like it would be useful though. I’d recommend posting that as a feature request as well.

Just use a standard Textarea fieldtype and make sure either “Show Formatting Buttons” or “Show File Chooser” is turned on. That’ll let you bring up the GUI file chooser I mentioned above.

    Does that help?

    Thanks Kevin,

Sorry, forgot about the ‘show file chooser’ button! Guess that issue is more Wygwam-related so have posted there. We can’t use the built-in textarea for clients as its too clunky creating lists, among other things.

Have given up posting feature requests, they’re all but ignored, or put on a waiting list 5 years long 😛 Just got to live with it as-is or develop an add-on.

Yep, totally understand about using Wygwam. That’s a great add-on. Hope BK’s able to give you a good solution there.

And I hear you on feature requests, sometimes it seems like that forum just gets ignored. But I assure you that we do listen, and we absolutely look to that forum for ideas on moving EE forward.

If there’s anything else I can do to help, don’t hesitate to ask!
