migrating templates from 1.x site to new 2.2.2 install

I’m helping a client migrate a site from one host provider to another one. Since they are currently on 1.6.8, I’m also trying to get them on the current EE 2.2.2 as well.

For various reasons, I’d like to set up a fresh install of 2.2.2 on the new host, rather than copy the existing 1.6.8 install over to the new host and go through the upgrade process.

I’m trying to figure out a good process for moving their content and templates over. I’ve discovered DataGrab, which I may try out for the content migration. Are there other approaches or insights that I should consider?

As for moving the templates, I know the templates need to be updated to be compatible with the current EE version. I realize this is what the upgrade wizard makes easy. Since I’m not using that wizard, I’m wondering if it’s not too unreasonable to try to make those changes manually. Are the changes that need to be made documented somewhere?

Any guidance, ideas, and insights are greatly appreciated.

For a start you could save your templates as files, then do a find & replace for ‘weblog’ with ‘channel’. I’m not too familiar with EE1.X so there may be a few other things that need updating, but you can probably just do the find & replace first, then fix the rest through trial and error. Of course it depends on the size of the site, but I’d personally rather do this manually. Good luck!

    nadea.c,

I would recommend recreating the EE1.6.8 site on a local install and upgrading it there.
And by recreating I mean pulling down all the files and adding the previous database. Not a fresh install of EE1.6.8 and then add the live database.
You can do your cleaning of the Pharma hack there also then after your clean move it up to the new host.

I have replied relating to the hack in your other thread.
