    Hello,

Are there limitations on file dimensions of images when uploading?

Twice now I have had issues uploading large format images. Most recently, I tried uploading a 1872x1427 image and the thumbnail image never generated.

On each occasion, I had to manually create the thumbnail myself.

Just curious if this is a bug, feature, or is there just something wrong with my setup?

    ExpressionEngine v2.1.3 Build: 20101220

    Thanks for listening!

    Cheers,
    Micky

    Micky,

Most likely a limitation of your server.

To create that thumbnail your server uses what’s called PHP memory. How much do you have? You can find this in your PHP Info under your Tools menu

Hi John! Thanks so much for your quick reply, I really appreciate the help. 😊

... PHP memory. How much do you have? You can find this in your PHP Info under your Tools menu

Ah, that’s good to know. I normally don’t have problems except for images that have large dimensions.

Do you think “memory_limit 128M” is enough?

    One image was 1872px X 1427px and the other was 8407px X 600px.

The image uploads fine, its the thumbnail that does not work which makes it so I have to cancel out of the uploads window. When I look on the server, the thumbnail is missing and I have to generate a thumb in Photoshop (which, unfortunately, for some odd reason, does not load in the EE file browser views).

Anyway, like you say, it must be a limitation of my server. I think I am maxed out on the memory_limit setting.

I should probably see if there is an upgrade to EE… Maybe that will help too? 😊

    Thanks!

    Hey Micky,

Yep, an upgrade to ExpressionEngine 2.2.2 would definitely be a difference for you! You may still need to bump your PHP memory limits, but the file manager has been completely rebuilt since 2.1.3. Give it a try. 😊

Sounds good Kevin! I will ask my host to bump up the memory limit and I will upgrade to 2.2.2! 😊

Thanks so much for the help Kevin and John, I really appreciate it. 😊

    Cheers,
    Micky

I was able to upload the file you linked to successfully using EE 2.2.2.

NOTE: There is a bug in the file upload from the File Manager, but I was able to upload from inside an entry. My memory limit was set to 99M.

Awsome! That’s great news. Thanks so much for testing Sue, I really appreciate the help! 😊

I plan on upgrading to the latest EE this weekend.

I don’t regularly upload such large files, but I am hoping that upgrading EE will do the trick (that, and contacting my host if things still act funny).

Sounds good! Thanks for the tips and the details on your memory limit. 😊

Thanks to all of you for the help! I really appreciate the pro assistance!!!

    Have a great day.

    Cheers,
    Micky
