I have Lion but not installed it yet….waiting till I finish some critical client work (I am superstitious!!!).

Usually with these upgrades Mysql seems messed up - anyone upgraded yet? How is the path - smooth?

I updated a few days ago - an iMac that I use for development (including MAMP) and my MacBook.  Both went smooth as silk and no problems to report. Good luck to you!

Double smooth here. Plenty to like about Lion and MAMP. Lion install was fastest, easiest, most trouble-free of all OS X versions. Next up,  OS X Hello Kitty.

I am not using Mamp but a package MySql install or else I would just go for it. Probably this weekend…..

    Hi Tarquin,

Lion no longer uses MySQL, they changed to postgresql. You will have to manually build MySQL and import your databases. Then most likely rebuild/reset your websites to run the new SQL. Also if it’s anything like Lion server all of your sites are going to be wiped as well. It seems to update to Apache2 and start a clean vHost.

    Lion Server:
Also if you are running OS X server and upgrade you will more then likely run into several problems with users and groups. After three days I finally got my Users and Groups back (partially) and just got File Sharing, SMB, FTP and SSH working again. This required manually updating everybody and the groups to use the old users I had to rebuild. I found a bunch of strange users that seemed to be created during the upgrade that I am assuming were failed attempts to port them over from SL.

You will need to use the Server Admin 10.7 tools (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1419) to get any manageability back, the Server.app that comes with Lion server pretty much blows chunks. Funny though the server tools do not control your services anymore, like Web, File Sharing, iChat etc… or at least I haven’t gotten it working.

All in all lots of problems for me upgrading my server to Lion and wished I hadn’t. I believe Mamp runs it’s own MySQL demon so upgrading the desktop version of Lion won’t break it. You can read the thread I got most of my information from here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/15663756#15663756

    Hope this helps.

Yikes !! That is definitely something that gives pause for thought. Not so much the installation of the MySql packages as I always did that of any new install anyway but Apache hosing the databases?????? I hope that’s not the case as that would represent (yet more) prima facie evidence of Apple abandoning pro users and the design community that put them where they are.

Wouldn’t surprise me though….they don’t care about anyone except ‘consumer users’ now.

Yeah I agree, I wasn’t really happy to find all this out after the fact.

I probably have the same setup that you have on my powerbook that I used to build test sites but I haven’t had time to monkey around with it. I upgraded to Lion and just took a quick look; Apache won’t start, the SQL preference pain isn’t supported and there isn’t a SQL process running so….... looks like thats hosed.

FYI, I used the Mark Liyanage MySQL installation guide from entropy.ch many many years ago to build my development environment on my laptop. Which replaced the default MySQL installation and made it real easy to run LAMP sites. Used PHPMyAdmin to control everything as well and everything worked great. MySQL has a .dmg to install MySQL, then you’ll probably have to mess with apache to get it to use the new database. I haven’t even looked into what they did with PHP…

a man can only take so much. :ahhh:

There may be light!! I have been reading some reports that on the basic Lion install (ie not server) all you have to do - in theory!!! - is to install the 10.6 MySql package and preference pane from MySql and it works. Also seems the Apache update is not the case in Lion non-server. Touch wood.

I was worried something like this would happen a few years back when Oracle/Sun acquired MySql but all seemed fine and I was lulled into a false sense of security. Looks like it’s now coming home to roost.

I guess we’d better read the writing on the wall on this one.
