Less Than Sign in Title Broke Site

So, not sure if this is a bug report, a feature request, or perhaps I have an addon installed that is causing this, but I recently had a title in one of my entries with a less than sign in the title, and any page that pulled that entry in gave the white screen of death.  As soon as I removed that sign from the title and saved the entry, things were smooth again.

Normally I would just avoid using these, but the site that I was using pulls in data automatically and I can’t control the titles without manually editing entries.  Is this something that can be easily adjusted in a future build of EE?

It is possible that this isn’t an ExpressionEngine problem, but instead a rendering problem? That is, when you view the source of the page, do you see all of the HTML for it, or are you simply getting no data sent by the server?

I mention this because it’s possible that your browser is choking on the < and not rendering anything from that point on, especially if your site is XHTML-based with a server delivering true XML.

Hi, Ryan. On a very generic template, I can’t replicate the problem you’re having. You might want to try with a different template, and see if that makes a difference.

    Thanks Waldo and Sue.

@Waldo, good thought.  I did just replicate the problem and check the source code.  Unfortunately, I didn’t see anything rendered other than the template debugger that I have turned on.

@Sue, thanks for trying this on your own generic template.  I did just try to replicate it again, and realized that it does choke on the less than sign, but not the greater than sign.  Weird huh?  It helps to know that it is not happening with every EE instance, so perhaps I’ll play around more with different testing templates, and try to reduce the code it a very simple template to see what I can find out.

Sounds good. It’s not a problem per se with EE, but perhaps with a template or add-on you’re using. Closing the thread, if needed you can re-open.
