Hi, about to be building two (completely separate) client sites which are both very much product-led.

Both sites will require categories and sub-categories.

I know I can use EEs native category solution here, but I do find that it’s not particularly user friendly for clients. I’m a big fan of Structure and would love to use this here, but think it may have consequences down the line when i.e. if we need to add search/filtering by categories/sub-categories and other items.

Does anyone know of any more cool ways to build (reasonably complicated) category structured sites within EE? Just want to make sure that it’s best for the clients long term.

Both clients also possibly want to import product data from external systems on a fairly regular basis. I’ve seen DataGrab which looks pretty good, though it may not be able to deal with categories that well. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

    Cheers,

    Richard.

Hi, Richard. I don’t have any direct experience of dealing with using Structure, so I can’t comment on that part of your question.

Might something like this help? http://devot-ee.com/add-ons/categories/

As far as importing, I’ve used DataGrab, but not really fiddled much with the categories part of things. I think I’d try things out in a local install and see how it goes for you.

Or I can move this to the Community Help forum since the questions you’re asking may have to do with third party add-ons.

Thanks Sue, I’ll take a look at that plugin, though not sure that answers my question.

It might make sense if you could move this to Community Help then, if that’s okay?

    Richard,

If you go ahead with Structure you should have no problems with searching and filtering by categories.

There is an addon which helps with this called zoo triggers

Moving to Community Help for you

    Hi John,

Thanks, I’ve never heard of Zoo triggers. Sounds cool.

As it turns out, don’t think I can use Structure at the moment as the client needs to be able to import product data into EE, so looking as using DataGrab to do this. Unfortunately they currently (apparently) don’t place nice together. Data import is more important for this project so think that has got to be the decider here.

P.S. Look forward to hearing your talk at EEUK in Manchester. Hopefully get an opportunity to say hello and thanks for your various help on the forums.

    Cheers,

    Richard.
