Uh, letting another company - especially Facebook - “own” your content or discussions is bad business! Really bad!

Facebook and similar sites could lose content anytime - they could decide to hide content or make it only viewable to certain people…they can decide to archive it at intervals which you may not be happy with. They may not allow google and other search engines to get to it.

In short - for a “low value” communication method it may work fine - your alumni association, for instance! But for anything of real value, no one in their right mind would trust or use facebook.

Content ownership is very important. If it’s on Facebook, you don’t own it. Facebook owns it. Yes, it’s your content, but it’s also Facebook’s content. Facebook benefits.

Back in the early internet days, disintermediation was all the rage. Airlines and hotels were hot to find others to sell their wares. Priceline. Orbitz. Cheap Tickets. Many others were glad to help out. The result? The airlines and hotels lost their customers to the new middle man. Now they’re fighting hard to reclaim the customer.

It’s your content. Don’t give it away.

and what if there is another site “like facebook” but offer more resources, like owners can control you own publicity… and win money… by example

Does this carry over to images/ pieces of art? For example if an artist or photographer has examples of their work posted on facebook, does Facebook now have the right to use these images as they wish? More importantly if someone gets the image from a facebook post does the original author have any legal rights to that image?
