2.x File manager not displaying thumbnails

I am having a similar issue to this that none of the previous solutions mentioned have solved.

Specifically, I upgraded from 2.1.0 for the reason of solving File Manager issues but they have gotten worse. In 2.1.0, bringing up the File Manager to add a file to a post (using the File field), would have a big lag on drawing thumbnails. Is that because of large files (5mb+) in the folder?

After upgrading to EE v2.1.3 Build: 20101220, the File Manager no longer displays thumbnails of files uploaded via FTP. In other words, for speed’s sake I upload a bunch of jpgs via FTP, go the the CP to create a post and Add File, it brings up the File Manager, eventually shows the thumbnails (no improvement in speed of displaying them over 2.1.0) of everything I’d uploaded prior to upgrading, but none of the jpgs I’ve uploaded since. I’ve run the Server Wizard (good), checked permissions, (thumbs folder needed to be changed but didn’t solve the issue), and verified several other settings mentioned in various threads.

Curiously, one experiment proved partially successful. Within the post, when I click Add File, then use the File Manager to post the jpg and after its uploaded, click Back to Post (or whatever the button on the right says) it works - adds the jpg, shows the thumbnail in the post and displays properly. However, click the Add File again and browsing to that folder does NOT show the file in the window. Weird.

Any ideas what’s going on and how to fix this?

    Thanks for your help,
    -Peter

The site is hosted on Network Solutions - just in case that helps.

Further investigation reveals something must have gone wrong during the update as new entries, after being submitted without error, don’t show up anywhere. Being a front-end designer, I’m at a loss to pinpoint the problem.

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Hi, PeterProductions.

Files uploaded via FTP don’t have thumbnails generated for them automagically, but we are working on a massive update to the File Manager. For right now, EE 2.1.4 beta has the ability to display in a list view, which will be helpful for when you have the files in a folder.

But it won’t help with displaying a thumbnail at this stage. But it’s on the list to be fixed.

Thank you for your reply, Sue.

What do you think would cause the other issue where I use the File Manager within a post to upload a jpg and it posts successfully on the site but even then the thumbnail won’t show in the list?

This is a mission critical site or I would try the beta on it. Or do you feel it’s stable enough?

As it is (with the other issues included) I’m wondering if I should revert back to my backup of 2.1.0 until 2.1.4 is ready.

    Any thoughts?

The beta is fairly stable.  You can see the existing, known bugs in the Bug Tracker, and sort on Version, then you can make your own decision.  With that said, we do not recommend running a beta of any software on a mission-critical installation.

As for the thumbnails - can you check if you have a _thumbs directory, and the permissions on that?  They need to be 777.

I wouldn’t revert unless it’s really that critical to your site’s workflow.  There have been many, many bugs fixed since 2.1.0, that are worthwhile to have in there.

Yes, I do have a _thumbs folder in each file directory and the permissions are all at 777. They weren’t originally but I changed them after reading other threads. However that hasn’t helped with the non-displaying thumbnails when using the File Manager within an entry. I can see file previews when using the File Manger under the Content menu though.

What I’d do is to do a local install with the beta and use your database to test with. At least see if the workflow would be better for your clients. Or just install the beta locally and use the Agile theme. Then add a few images and see how that works for you then.

    Make sense?

    Yes, I understand.

I’ve gotten a few of the issues fixed and can use the workaround to get the thumbnails to display in the entry. So I’ve chosen to keep things as they are for now and update to 1.6.4 when it’s ready to handle the File Manager issues.

Thank you very much for your help.

Sorry, had a brain freeze. I meant 2.1.4.

I figured that’s what you were talking about. 😊 In that case, closing the thread. Don’t hesitate to post again as needed.
