I am in the process of building my portfolio site and on the detail pages I have screen grabs of images in a slider and larger previews pop up when you click on the screengrab.

Now, the problem I have is that that I’m using the EE2 image upload and imgsizer plug in to make a thumbnail based on the single image but the proportions are wrong.

Is the only way to have a thumbnail upload and alt image to use FF Matrix or are there other plugin options. I saw there was old article with a branched off FF matrix but the site is no longer live.

Have a look at this plugin (http://www.causingeffect.com/software/ee/ce_img), it might help you to control cropping for your thumbnail images.

There are a number of ways you could upload additional images without using Matrix—though Matrix is likely to be the easiest!

If all you need is a (custom) thumbnail and main image, maybe just make two file upload fields in your Channel? A slightly more complex approach might be to create a separate Channel to hold your images and use a related field to link them to the parent entry?

Matrix may be the easiest then for speed. Its about time Ellislabs just bought that at the WYGWAM and made it part of the commercial package in my opinion.

Matrix will probably be the easiest option for managing multiple images, especially if each entry is likely to have a different number of images.

But that assumes you’re going to create your alt/thumbnails manually? If you still want to automatically generate a thumbnail/cropped image you will still need an image handling plugin.

As its for my own portfolio I’ll probably be picky about thumbnails so manually uploading them would be the best.

Was just having to get out of the $55 fee. If it was half the price it would be ok but the guy must be raking it in as most EE sites need it in some way or another, basing this on the show-ee list of addons for projects.

If you really want to avoid buying Matrix, you could manage this manually. Just create a directory for your folio images and adopt a naming convention for your images.

something like:

/folio/x/thumbnail.png
/folio/x/image.png

Where “x” is the entry id. Then you can just construct the URLs from within your template, like this:

<img arc=”/folio/{entry_id}/thumbnail.png” >

The only drawback with this approach is that the images aren’t directly tied to their entries in EE.
