Creating a large website with deep levels of pages

I’m presenting EE as an option to a company I work with tomorrow. They’re currently on WordPress and we hate working with it, so we’re pushing hard for EE. However, it’s a very very large site and they have pages that go down several levels. ( /home/products/gnatpro/development_solutions/safety-critical/mils/ )

One of the things we want to do is provide a lot of dynamic content, so all the pages leading up would definitely not simply be entries in a channel. So the pages module or the Taxonomy Add on, I don’t see as working as a solution. What I’m really trying to achieve is something along the level of nested templates. Our design has a breadcrumb trail and all that. All the examples of large websites on EE that I’ve found have never gone down further than the Template Group > Template level.

Is there a different way we can approach this? A different way of thinking about it? Or is there an EE solution to this problem?

    Thanks for any help,

Or maybe we put most of the pages in the standard Template Group > Template format, but we preserve the breadcrumb path somebody took to get there. So the breadcrumbs don’t simply mirror the URL structure. Does that make sense? Is that possible?

    Hi Dave,

Have you looked at Structure? There’s probably a few ways to go about this and you might try the CodeShare Corner, as you’ll get more feedback from the community there. Let me know if you want me to move this over or if you have any other questions!

Thanks, I’ll check that out. And yeah, I’ll try CodeShare if you think it’ll help.

    Hi, Dave,

This can definitely be done - even with channel entries.  But for the displays that you want for breadcrumbs you may need a custom plugin.  Structure may be a great option as well, so definitely look into it.

I’ve also moved this down to the CSC for any further community input.

    Good luck with the project!
