hi all. i have a client who is setting up a system for educators. They want to be able to register school districts with teachers in those school districts, and then child accounts related to teachers.  I’ve been thinking about this as having a District as a member group, with Teachers as a subgroup…

    Something like this:
    District
    -Teacher
    —kid

So that a child can switch teachers as well. additionally, any reporting or tracking on one member will filter up to the district.

Is there anything out there in EE that can do this? Something to begin with that can be extended? User doesn’t appear to have sub-groups for members at all. thanks for any suggestions for direction…

Interesting.. I saw this kind of question on twitter few days ago..

This is my idea, but maybe doesn’t fit exactly, but maybe gives you some ideas.

Don’t know how much freedom you want to give to “kids” account, but if a teacher is the only one who can edit kids accounts, I would go maybe with channel entries for kids, and teachers as members with rights to edit that channels. That way you can make relation between author/teacher and kids

The other is option (I never use it) to play with custom profile fields. You could have one member group ‘teachers’ and other group ‘kids’ with custom field lets say “teacher_id”, and with User give an drop down option in front end to select teacher (that drop down you can fill with teacher group members), so you don’t have nothing hardcoded.

So this way you can make your own relation path between those two groups. Also, you could make the same for District. And the rest is playing with tags in templates how to show every profile..

    I hope this helps 😊

Solspace’s User module has a functionality for categories within member groups.  That may do the trick.
