My understanding is that MSM would work in these first two (2) configurations:
1)
http://www.acme-site-1.com
http://www.acme-site-2.com
http://www.acme-site-3.com
2)
site-1.acme.com
site-2.acme.com
site-3.acme.com
Would MSM be able to work in this configuration, i.e., the sub-dir determines the “site”?

It could indeed! Each MSM ‘site’ is only another index.php file, so you could very easily place three different index.php files (routing to three different MSM sites) in three different directories. It’s very flexible like that. Read more on setting up domains, subdomains or directories over at the User Guide.

Yes - Thanks for the info.
Is there any technical limitation to the number of sites handled by MSM? We’re considering 20-25 ... does that put any undue strain on the overall installation? Or would we be better simply to use separate installations [assuming issues like shared community, posts, etc. could be handled in an alt method]?

Really your only limiting factor should be the hardware that you are on and the implementation strategy that you take. For instance, you may want to take a look at performance articles with EE. In certain situations we have seen sites with excessive queries to the database or templates embedded too many layers deep that cause issues with performance. ExpressionEngine is capable of handling quite a bit of traffic if placed on the right hardware. So proceed with confidence.

Currenly, I have an EE 2.1.3 website running with freelance license. Now, I want to have multiple domain website using MSM. I know that I have to upgrade my EE license, Do I need to upgrade my code as well?
Please advise in details as much as possible so I have better understanding.

You will need to Update from Freelancer to utilize the MSM.
