    We had a major problem this morning when twitter went down and all of our sites running twitter timeline were locking up.  There did not seem to be any kind of a cut off for the plugin when attempting to reach the api. This happened to both EE1.x and EE2.x sites with no difference. We did some research and found the following could be added:

    use_stale_cache=“no”

    Will this solve our issue so that if the API is not reachable or twitter is down that our sites will still load and won’t be paralyzed by this plugin?

    I also found a post somewhere on here about a bug in a recent 2.x version that would cause a problem with cache expiration.  I guess I don’t imagine that could be my whole problem since I had the same results regardless of EE version.

    Thanks,

    use_stale_cache=“no”
    - Show blank data if the cache is stale and the Twitter api could not be reached.

    From that description, I would say you are correct and that it should solve your problem.

    Personally, I think it would be fun to place a fail whale on my site.  😉

    FWIW I haven’t found the twitter plugins to be reliable since Twitter updated it’s API.  I’ve resorted to using Twitters .js widgets to display tweets instead, but haven’t noticed what happens there when twitter is down.
