MSM set up process stalled

Trying to set up a second site with MSM. ( EE 1.7 ) Following the installation instructions as posted in the User Guide. Everything went well until step 3 on this page

The issue is that when ever I select the new site from the ‘Sites’ tab, I remain on the main site. The name in the bread crumbs does not update with the new site name. So I cannot complete step 3 or do anything else in terms of setting up the new site. Please advise.

Was reading thru some forum posts and thought deleting all my cookies related to the site would help. It didn’t help but it sure did change things. I can no longer log in. Each time I submit, I can take back to the login screen.

If I go into the config.php file and set multiple_sites_enabled to ‘n’. I can log in again. When multiple_sites_enabled is set to ‘y’, I can’ login.

If I try to change the URL from

    http://www.cdowcym.org/sysfiles/index.php?S=0&C=edit

    to

    http://www.cdowcym.org/sysfiles/index.php?S=3&C=edit

nothing changes, I stay on the main/original site.

When watching the cookies EE generates as I test enable and disabling MSM and trying to log in etc. Every so often a series of cookies appear that use the OLD testing URL for the site. I have been looking every where in the settings for the testing URL so I can update it, but I can’t find it. I use Deeploy helper but have also searched ‘manually’.

Are you on the latest version of both EE and the MSM? Are you using any extensions? When you say “can’t log in”, what exactly happens?

  • #6 / Feb 10, 2011 4:41pm

    EE 1.7 and MSM 1.1

When I can’t login, upon submiting username and password, I am taken back to the login screen. Almost as though nothing happens but you can see the progress bar on the browser indicate the page is loading. And I can see the timestamp on the cookies change.

    Extensions
    jQUery for the CP 1.1.1
    LG Add Sitename 1.2.0
    FieldFrame 1.4.3
    Edit Tab AJAX 1.2.2
    Category Checkboxes 1.1.5
    Clone Entries 1.1
    Super Search 1.2.0
    Champagne 1.0.3

Setting up the second site worked as expected? Can you please try to disable extensions globally? Just wanting to rule out an issue.

  • #8 / Feb 15, 2011 6:43am

Turns out the issue is a htaccess rewrite rule I had in place to change the URL from .com to .org. If I disable the rule, MSM works.

Via Deeploy Helper, all the URLs are set to .org but all the server paths are .com. Do the server paths have to be .org for MSM to work?

I don’t follow. The MSM can work with multiple domain names, but the paths need to be correct. If it works without using mod_rewrite it’s probably a rewriting issue.

Not sure how to define that paths are correct. I used deeploy helper to find all the paths and get them working.

And not sure how the rewrite rule would affect MSM. Could you point me in the right direction? What should I be looking for?

    Hendrik-Jan Francke,

Via Deeploy Helper, all the URLs are set to .org but all the server paths are .com.

What do you mean by server paths are .com? Paths don’t have a domain ending like this

Where is your second site in relation to your root directory?
This directory will also need the same htaccess. Did you try that?

At RackSpace Cloud, where the site is hosted, the server paths are

    /mnt/stor2-wc2-dfw1/XXXXXX/XXXXXXXX/www.cdowcym.com/web/content/images/captchas/

They use the domain name in the server path. But I am now guessing the .com in the server path doesn’t matter since its referring to a folder name on the server.

As for your question “Where is your second site…” I haven’t even gotten that far, I was following these instructions and was stuck at step 3.

I am not following completely. Does disabling .htaccess still make it work? Can you actually access the .org folder from the .com one?

  • #14 / Feb 16, 2011 4:14pm

Thanks. I have just completed switching the hosting around so .org is the official domain name and I don’t have to use rewrites etc. I wish I knew what the cause was and the solution but it was easier to change the hosting around (which is unique to RackSpace that I have to do that).

Thanks for trying to stay on top of it.

Glad you were able to find a workaround. Feel free to start a new thread if you have any more questions.
