Cannot view site when logged in CP?

When I’m logged in CP and go to the site I get the following error message in Safari (and similar messages in Firefox and Chrome):

Safari can’t open the page “http://ee-test/”. The error is: “cannot decode raw data” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1015)…

But then when I logout, the site works again (without any error message).

I have tried different things (deinstalled updated Matrix and Facelift add-ons; the only changes I made since I notice this behavior), but without any difference; I only found out the following for what it’s worth:

When I remove only one of the following cookies the site works again (of course related to being logged in/out):

    - exp_uniqueid
    - exp_userhash

Do you have any idea, how this can be solved, and what’s really the problem here?

In this case it’s about my local testing site (running on EE 2.1.3 and PHP 5.3.3), and another locally hosted site I’m working on, also EE 2.1.3, has the same issue!

    Hi Studio Dumbar,

Do you have GZIP enabled at Admin > System Administration > Output & Debugging? If so, please disable this option and then test this again. Also, if you are using an .htaccess file for these sites please post the contents here.

    Cheers

    Hi Greg,

Disabling GZIP Output in the CP doesn’t make a difference?! And I also temporarily removed my htacces file, but without a difference either…

Please find attached the htaccess file I’m using; it’s mainly derived from HTML5 Boilerplate’s htaccess file.

    Thanks for helping,

    Jonathan

    Studio Dumbar,

I get the following error message in Safari (and similar messages in Firefox and Chrome):

What is the error message in FF?

This only happens when logged in as SuperAdmin right?

Take a look at this thread

    Hi John Henry,

I get the following error message in Firefox (3.6.13):

    Content Encoding Error

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression.

And this is the one in Chrome (9.0.597.84):

    This webpage is not available

The webpage at “http://ee-package/” might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

    Error 330 (net::ERR_CONTENT_DECODING_FAILED): Unknown error.

I had a look at the other thread, and it’s indeed the exact same problem. It’s a pity there’s no solution to the problem, but when the site is nog working only when being logged in as an admin (clients wont’ have the problem), it’s doable, but far from convenient while developing the site…

It’s also weird I didn’t have the problem a week earlier with the same EE install (version 2.1.3); as far as I can remember i only updated some add-ons (Matrix and Taxonomy) and added a new one (Simple S3 Uplaoder). But I already disabled/uninstalled all add-ons, and that didn’t solve the ‘problem’ :(

Is that a local setup, or a professionally hosted server? I’ve seen behavior like that due to DNS issues. When you use the IP address instead, does that work?

It’s a local setup; the default Apache installation that ships with OS X 10.6.

I’ve tried both with my (local) IP address and “http://localhost/”, but the problem stays the same as long as I use the same domain (IP, local- or virtual host) for both the site and CP: when logged in as Admin the site gives the earlier mentioned error, logged out the site is visible.

    And for completeness:
I’m using VirtualHostX to create virtual hosts like “http://ee-package/” on my Mac; without any problems until last week.
Today I tried the same EE installation (I copied files and exported DB) on my MacBook (also default Apache OS X 10.6 installation), but I had the same issue on my MacBook.

    Studio Dumbar,

Searching for the error in Google pulls back a couple of hundred results. It is not confined to EE. I spotted a few with some suggested server tweaks which may help

Thanks for all the help! I finally got my problem solved:

    - First I disabled output compression in the config.php file instead of via the CP: $config[‘compress_output’] = FALSE;
    - Then I got a PHP warning related to the Cache Buster add-on, I now remembered installing and testing last week (that PHP error was not visible when output compression was TRUE!)
    - I removed the {exp:cache_buster … } … {/exp:cache_buster} tags from my templates…
    - … and now everything is working again, even when I’m logged into the CP!

No idea if it was related to my local Apache, the Cache Buster add-on or a combination, but it’s solved now and for now I’m just not using the Cache Buster add-on!

    Thanks again,
    Jonathan
