Can I build a membership site with Expression Engine that does this?

This is a repost from the pre-sales forum:

If I want to build a third party membership site where on the front end interface I let members manage their own information via updates and edits, get offers exclusive to their group, sign up for these offers using forms, download exclusive content, and even cancel their membership, can I do it?

This is the kind of information I want them to be able to receive on their account page:

    1. Special offers currently available to them
    2. Their set of static assets: documents and contracts

I am not expecting drop-in functionality. With a combination of channels, cutom fields and categories, we can build this; am I right?

Yes, I don’t see why not. Let me move this to General as there seems to be no actual Tech Support issue (yet). Thanks.

Sounds to me like something EE would deal with very easily. Possibly even straight out of the box with no plugins using the standard member module.

I’m looking a a somewhat similar set of requirements for a project I’ve got coming up and I’m expecting to end up using Solspace User module to give some extra functionality and easy control of memberships, but I don’t think it’s necessarily a requirement, I’ve always found EE’s member tools to be pretty powerful and easy to work with.

    Hi menkonta,

Thanks for sharing. I realize now that EE is pretty powerful that way natively but what happens when I want to add my own membership template - not just talking about custom fields here.

Would the Solspace module finally be the answer? Have you tried? What kind of results are you getting?

And you wanna see what I have to build? - check this out:

Do you think the User module can help me with this?

    Hi,

OK - I might be a bit confused here with what you need to do ... are you trying to build this statusboard site or something that looks like it but different types of data?

The member module (whether or not you’re enhancing with User) will help you structure your members and set permissions etc - but the actual data any member is seeing on your site would be stored in a section entry (I’m still in EE 1.6 mode - I think that would be a channel entry in EE2 now?). Each entry you’d assign to a member and then show the relevant entry based on their login.

For them to be able to edit any member info, you can give them an SAEF (SafeCracker maybe worth a look).

Not sure if this is actually answering your question - but I’m not entirely clear what information you’re having to display or how it’s being entered.

I’m still in the process of writing up the spec for my project so I’ve not fired up EE and User yet to be getting any results.

I am writing up the specs too. This is just a rich prototype but I am headed in this direction. Am using EE2 now - so yes that would be a channel entry.

Yes thank you for the SAEF reference - I am going to be using that.
I am going to check up with you in a while and ask you about the User module - there’s still a couple of weeks for my project to start.

Its my first site in EE - very excited - best of luck on your project 😊
