Just upgraded and I am trying to figure out why the html format buttons are not showing up on publish pages. The image upload buttons shows up, as well as the spell check and glossary. I have them turned on under channel settings.

What version and build of EE are you using now? Are you using any extensions?

Be sure you’ve updated those extensions, where appropriate.
In particular, Solspace has needed to make changes on their Tag module for at least two recent EE releases; and if you don’t realize to do the upgrades, the exact symptom is to lose the html format buttons. Other things too.
When you update of third-party extensions, be sure you include updating their themes. This is where the problems with Solspace actually occurred.
You’ll likely need to run their update routine(s) as well, which will appear where the extension controls do under Add-Ons.

p.s. I’m pretty happy to see that Ellis is looking at ways to eliminate these unknown-interactions problems on releases, with their add-on partners. In the Forecast recently.

Everything is current. I did it all at the same time just a few days ago.

Well, good - presumably you looked at all the details, and assured clean replacement.
It does seem a pretty close encounter not to be the issue, but can be so.
2.1.3 itself does not have this problem so far as I am aware, while others have cleared it by doing extension upgrades - not just here.

Hmm. I just had a look at the Solspace site.
- User module has just had an update - 17 January. So your ‘few days’ might be critical.
- However, more likely as a culprit would be the Freeform module, which hasn’t been updated since November. The December upgrades to EE had changes that Tag at least had to respond to, or again lose the html buttons.
Seems you might possibly learn something from temporarily renaming the themes folders where these Solspace themes exist, clearing browser cache for sure; and for completeness, EE caches, even though I think those aren’t involved with the CP.
Then try your Editor with a fresh CP login, and see if the html buttons come back. I don’t know if the fault will respond to this (could also be from emitted javascript from PHP), but could be worth finding out.

To clarify, before you upgraded the HTML buttons were showing on some or all publish fields but now they are not? Did you upgrade your EE themes when upgrading?
