I’ve taken up a new project this year, and it appears to be quite amazing! 😊
I need a little help with determining which, of the many available, addons to use, evaluate, purchase.

My client would like something similar in functionality to DeviantArt. Similar to the idea of a (social) community of talented artists with the freedom to upload and share their artworks. This website would cater to local artists (paintings, sculptures, poems, song lyrics, music) and offer a tiered membership. The lower level being free with upload-ability, rating/voting on entries, comments. The higher level would allow them to sell their artwork (with a small commission going to the site), and be listed in an “artist for hire” section of the site.

This is just a brief, very general description of the sites offerings.
I have just started to look through devot-ee yesterday, and came across the following which may help me: CE Image, and VZ Exif.

What else would you all recommend?

I forgot to mention that we already have Matrix 2.0.11 by Pixel & Tonic, and NSM .htaccess Generator 1.0.3.

I saw NavEE and realized it would be most beneficial. I’d have to find out how well it works with our jQuery superfish drop navigation. We are up to three layers deep, due to the extensive categories list.

You’ll probably want the user/member module from Solspace. I haven’t used it yet, but by all accounts it’s indispensable for sites that need it.

Yep, as Sean said, once you’ll be doing stuff with members you’ll want to be able to have all of your member data have access to your own templates so that you can continue to have the same look and feel of your site while they edit, view and update their info.

User can do a lot of other cool stuff too so be sure to check it out.

Thanks fellas, for the SolSpace User recommendation.

I haven’t built a site with 2.x before, is Freeform still highly recommended?

I can’t think of anything offhand. If when you’re building it you come across requirements that EE can’t accomplish out of the box, then you can have a look at Devot-ee to see if anything’s out there that can help you.

Solspace also has a good tagging module - http://www.solspace.com/software/detail/tag/. I’ve used it on a few projects now and it’s pretty powerful.

Thanks mhughes73, I was looking at it, and am awaiting for the client to make their decision.
They were also looking at the User module.

I’ve used that one as well and it’s great. The out of the box user templates for EE are a bit lacking…

Free tags -> http://www.devdemon.com/tagger/ and take a look at their addons for ‘gallery’ concept.
Don’t forget that EE native query module is quite powerful when building ‘user section’.....e.g. my comments, my channel entries (or galleries+ photo watermarks 😉) etc.
