I am in the process of upgrading from EE 1.6.8 Build 20091201 CORE to the latest EE 2.x

    I followed these instructions: http://ellislab.com/expressionengine/user-guide/installation/update_from_1.x.html

I am stuck at point 4:

    4.  Run The Update Wizard

Point your browser to the ExpressionEngine directory, located here:
    system/

I renamed my system folder, so I changed it appropriately but upon hitting enter I get the following message:

Your config file does not appear to be formatted correctly.

The site was running on this very same browser before without any problems.

What can I do now? Thanks!

Do you have config.php and path.php in place? Do they correctly specify the new system folder’s name? Does that folder exist, and contain the new files?

Update: always the basics… *smacksforehead* I ran the ExpressionEngine 2.x Server Compatibility Wizard which came up with two critical errors. Guess which ones? Not a hard guess, hugh? PHP and SQL are below the requirements. I just send an email to the hosting provider to upgrade both components.

Once it’s changed I’ll try it again and then come back here with the results.

Everything’s up and running. 😊 (*makenotetoself: always check server config before updating*)

No worries 😉 glad to see you were able to solve it. Please post again as needed.
