It seems the largest custom field I can create is 999 characters.
Is there a way around that?

What kind of custom field are you trying to use?
Can you tell us which version/build of EE1.x you’re using? See EEWiki:// HowTo Determine My EE Version

Text input, it won’t let me enter more than 3 digits in the field length.

That’s normal. Text input is limited to 128 characters. If you want more, you’d use the text area field.

Not really because textarea won’t cut it but if it’s a known feature, I guess I’ll just have to learn to live with it.
