This question may be related to a resolved thread.

I’m trying to install Expression Engine on my laptop
OS= Windows XP Pro, IIS 5.1

Web Server logs don’t tell much, but if there is something specific I should look for, please let me know.

    Install works fine to start:
All pre-installation tests have been completed successfully and no errors were detected.
    Agrees to accept the terms
Enter settings (Licence, server, db, etc.)
Upon clicking “Install Expression Engine” on that page, it gives HTTP 500 Internal Server Error.

You indicate this question could be related to the issue where it turned out to be specific to Firefox.  Have you tried in another browser?

Instead of IIS have you tried installing under apache?  You can get a complete apache/php/mysql setup with XAMPP here: http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html.  This is what I use for development on my local Windows machine.  For troubleshooting purposes at least you may want to try this to see if it’s an IIS issue.

    Hi dzaun,

    Welcome to the forums!

Did you run the Server Wizard from the Requirements page in the documentation? If not, please download and run that just to confirm that your setup meets the requirements.

As three80 says, you might also setup a local Apache, MySQL and PHP installation using XAMPP to run EE. Your webserver logs should detail the exact request that is causing the error so if you can find those and paste them here we can try and pinpoint the problem.

    Cheers

I need IIS on my laptop because I’m supporting some other applications.  I’m concerned if I attempt to install Apache it’ll affect that which I can’t afford right now.  I ran the requirements in both IE and Firefox with the same result.  After entering the SQL host, uid/pwd and db, it just goes to a blank page, no results.  The logs are shown here:

I can’t offer any help for that issue.  I’ve never had such a problem.  Also, I’ve never installed EE under IIS, only XAMPP.

For what it’s worth, I’m a web developer and I run IIS, Visual Studio and XAMPP on my laptop with no problems.  The key is that apache and mysql can be installed as services which would auto run on startup, but I don’t do that.  By default when XAMPP is installed they are not installed as services.  You can use the XAMPP control panel to install them as services any time thereafter.  I just manually start mysql and apache when needed.  I just make sure to shut down SQL Server when doing this; though that may not even be necessary.  So, I think you’d be just fine with it if were to try.  Otherwise,  I’d recommend using another computer to try installing this with XAMPP to see if it’s an IIS issue.

    Good luck.

    dzaun,

What version of PHP and MySQL are you running under Windows?
What version of EE are you trying to install?

The 500 is a server error so difficult to troubleshoot at the best of times from here unfortunately.

Can you edit and copy system/expressionengine/utilities/dbtest.php into your root and see if that works for you when visiting it in a browser please?
