Does anyone know if there is a way of hiding an EE site in the root directory so that visitors to the site can not see the live site but admins and members can. This would be particularly useful for admins who want to populate the site before visitors are able to see it. Currently I always upload the site to a hidden directory which means moving the site again which proves to be frustrating and time consuming. Any thoughts on this subject would be appreciated.

Change the Is system on? to no in your General Configuration
Admin > System Preferences > General Configuration

If you set this preference to “No” only members of the Super Admin group will be able to see the site. All other users will be shown the System Offline page, which you can edit at:

Admin > Specialty Templates > System Offline Template

That does many thanks. to be continued… Is there a way of setting the site so ‘Admins’ can also see the site when signed on. I would normally create accounts for the user of the site under the admins and reserve the super admins for myself?

Yes, you can set this separately for every user group: Admin > Members and Groups > Member Groups > Group > Site Access > Can view site when it is offline. Makes sense?
