Is there a setting to prevent this from happening? I want to match complete words only.

What version and build of EE are you using? How are you searching, using the search module? There’s an option for searching whole words, too.

Using the simple search form at the moment.
Is there something I can pass with the {exp:search:simple_form} tag?

Please try the advanced search. Start out with the example code from the docs and take it from there.
