There a several references on the forum to an upcoming conversion tool to migrate entries using the 1.6.x photo gallery to 2.x channels. These seem to have mostly been made during the beta phase of 2.0

    a) Is such a tool now available, and if not is it still planned and within what kind of timescale?
    b) If there is no such tool, is the recommendation not to upgrade sites that used the Photo Gallery module (see 2.0 release notes) still in force?
    c) If there is no such tool, are there any third party tools that provide an upgrade path?

    a) It is not available yet but yes, it is still planned.

For overall planning purposes, broadly speaking, would you expect it to become available within 3 months, 6 months, 1 year or more than 1 year?

Crikey.  I’m shocked. The only way I can make sense of having no indication whatsoever is that it’s not actually scheduled in for development in the short/medium term, but is a medium/long term aspiration. It’s a year since the convertor was first promised on this forum.  Weren’t photo gallery entires actually weblogs behind the scenes anyway - how hard can it be?

You must be aware that this is tantamount to commercial suicide. Once users of a company’s core product can be left with nothing but a vague promise that they can upgrade sometime, they are in effect being told to use a competitors product to get additional functionality. Simply put - I’d never be able to persuade clients that although we can’t upgrade their EE site to improve it, and we will need to redevelop it from scratch, the new EE is the way to go. There’s no chance, why on earth would they want to - once bitten twice shy?

This is most disappointing behaviour, it destroys that most vital and elementary aspect of a company’s customer relations - trust. It doesn’t matter how great your product is, once you get a reputation for leaving existing customers in the lurch success can soon collapse.

    Hi, Tim,

We have never given ETAs - well, the one notable exception turned out not so well (that was the release of EE 2).  In general, we have not given out ETAs.

Photo Gallery entries were not weblogs behind the scenes, though many people did use weblogs for photo galleries instead.  The photo gallery module is its own module, with its own database tables, categories, custom fields setup.  It is entirely separate from weblogs.  If it were actually just behind the scenes weblogs then no converter would be needed.

EE 1 is still a viable, widely used, current solution.  There is nothing wrong or bad with staying with EE 1 if you need this functionality until we have a solution in place.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Until you have clients asking you why they don’t have the latest/greatest, and then you have to explain why EE 2.0 isn’t the greatest while they think you’re making excuses.
