Strange Login Issues Happening only in IE8

I have an AJAX signin form at the top of all my pages.  For some reason, some people using IE8 can never log in on the home page - but they can log in just fine on any of the other pages.  I can’t actually replicate this issue (IE8 works 100% of the time for me and for a few other people that tested it for me from other machines), but enough people are having this problem that I need to come up with a fix.  I created an exact duplicate of the home page template, but gave it a funky name and sent a link to the template (mysite.com/index.php/main/homepage-testrep) to one of the people having the home page IE8 login problems, and they were able to log in on that page just fine.  Now I’m really scratching my head, because I don’t know how I fix that!  I can’t force mysite.com to always go to mysite.com/index.php/main/something and I don’t really know what I’ve learned from this whole test.  Any ideas?  Would be most grateful!

What version and build of EE are you using? To confirm, this only happens with IE8? Does this also apply to the built-in login form?

It’s on EE 1.6.9.  I am told that it does not happen on the actual login page - but the confusing thing is that even on the login page we are using the exact same script to bypass the system messages page and instead show the messages in a div thru AJAX.

Do you have the same issue with another browser?

Problem is, I can’t replicate the issue in any browser, but I am told from others experiencing the problem that it only happens in IE8.

Are any of those people behind a firewall?

Some are and some aren’t… I am and I can’t replicate the issue (which only happens on the home page when accessed as mysite.com but not when I have them use the login for on mysite.com/index.php/main/homepage-testrep).

How do the two pages differ?

The strange thing is, they don’t differ; I made a copy of the template used for the home page and sent the link to that page to the people having issues - they said they had no problems!  It doesn’t really make sense, because it’s an exact copy of the page that exhibits the intermittent login problems.  Through testing, we have also found that the login issues occur when users access the home page as http://www.mysite.com, but if they type it in as http://www.mysite.com/index.php, there are no login issues!

Hmmm.. how about an .htaccess file - is that at play? What about any CSS settings that involve browser sniffing?

No .htaccess file and the only browser sniffing is just the hacky old if IE6 conditional to serve up some CSS inline element fixes to IE6.

Do you’ve got a link to the site? That said, this certainly looks like a possible user agent issue, perhaps down to some local settings.

Sure - can I PM or msg you the link so as not to make it public?
