I have a site that is still running 1.6.4. For no known reason that I am aware of it started displaying the error “Unable to Load Site Preferences”. The site does not work, nor can I access the Control Panel.

Here’s what I’ve done so far:

I exported the DB using phpmyadmin from my Live site.
I installed a fresh version of 1.6.4 on my local machine and it got it working fine.
I imported the DB from my Live site to the local machine via phpmyadmin (using wampserver).
I get the same error on my local machine.

I tried updating to 1.6.9 on my local machine by following the instructions in the docs and adding all the required files.
Once it tries to update from 1.6.4 to 1.6.5 it throws the same error during the update.

Any ideas how to fix this?

    Thanks!

That sounds like a possible issue with your db, perhaps a damaged row or table? Do you have a recent backup that you can roll back to?

Unfortunately, the only backup I had was from a few months ago. Nothing recent. Is there any way to troubleshoot and locate the damaged row/table?

Can you try to import your db copy to the new setup, but not reload the exp_sites table? Keep the existing one there. I have reason to believe that your exp_sites table was damaged somehow. Or perhaps your host has a db backup?
