Let me preface this with I am only working on my second EE2 website and I first learned of EE 6 months ago. With that said ...

I want to be able to easily pick which categories I display on the front page of a website. Since I can’t use the same name for a custom field I don’t see a way to use one of those to select whether a category is “featured” or not.

Is there a way that I am not able to think about to accomplish this or do I have to restructure the website and use channels? Using channels brings about a bunch of other problems though.

Two ways come to mind:
1) Create a separates category group for featured categories
2) Create a custom category field that indicates whether or not the category is featured.

1) The site already uses multiple category groups so I don’t think I could use that method
2) Thought of this, but each category would have to have different field names so I could not filter the list without changing the template to look for each of the “featured” fields and this wouldn’t make it easy for the end user.

At this point the idea is more of a theoretical since the end user has changed what they want to work within the normal confines of EE2. So don’t work too hard on this. I can think of reasons to use this but it isn’t a priority.

in that case, why not just have a snippet that defines the id numbers of featured categories. Not the most user friendly, but definitely a simple option.

Something like:

1|32|55|95|127
