Upgrade from 1.6.2 to 1.6.9

I need to upgrade an EE 1.6.2 installation to 1.6.9. In order to be sure, I was thinking about starting the installation afresh on another server and connect with the same database that the EE 1.6.2 uses and once that is up and running smoothly switch the URL. Would that be the safest approach, or would it be necessary to work with a copy of the database? Working with the same database would be very convient as the editors could keep working on the old site while I optimise the new one.

    Cheers,
    Jolle

Hi, Jolle. What I’d do is install EE 1.6.9, make sure it works OK with the sample data, then copy over the older database, and then run the update script. Just make sure you have a good backup of the database before starting. Does that help?

    Hi Sue,
Thanks for the response. I’m not entirely sure what you mean though, so let me reiterate as I understand it now:

    1. I do a clean install of 1.6.9 over on a different server, using a clean new database
    2. I test to see if that runs smoothly
    3. I create a copy of the database of the 1.6.2 site and import that in the second database that is refered to by the 1.6.9 installation
    4. I run the update script to 1.6.9 over the site than already runs 1.6.9

That last step seems unlikely, I may have misunderstood you there… 😊

The reason I recommend installing a clean install is so that you can ensure it works as it should. Then when you copy over the older database, you’re going to need to upgrade to get the database changes between versions. When you replace the db, you lose the changes made to the db, but not the files themselves.

    Does that help?

Finally got around to doing a test, works like a charm. Thanks Sue!
