Can't view files in Fieldtypes Manager

Hi Guys,
Newbie question. I have fieldtype directories in system/extensions/fieldtypes and expected that I could see them listed under Fieldtypes Manager within the EE Control Panel but the page doesn’t list them? Is there something else I should be enabling.
