"Fake" Discussion Forums using weblogs and EE Comment functionality?

    Has anyone tried to “fake” a forum module on a site by just using standard EE tags? Without putting much thought in it, I was thinking (and not too deeply) you could use create a weblog, use category, saef, and comment tags (plus maybe optionally Solspace’s User Module) to create a “fake” discussion forum for your site.

    Might be a lot of work, but maybe easier than trying to skin the EE discussion forum.

    Thoughts?

    Skinning forum is not that difficult and far less work than your route…not to mention features lost in channel-comment based discussions.

    I have done just this on a number of sites.  As long as your requirements are simple, it works great.  As soon as you need anything more advanced, it quickly becomes restrictive.

    This was fairly common before the DF Module was released, as well.  I had a whole tutorial up on my site for it.  A long, long time ago.
