I saw the news that EE 2.1 is due out soon.  I am getting ready to revamp my website, and had a few questions to see if I could start doing some of that work now, or if it would be better to wait.

Are there any major changes to the templates?
Will a template created in 1.6.8 work the same in 2.1?

What are the issues about formating for smart phones?
I assume it will be mostly in setting up templates, is that correct?

What are the major database changes?
I currently use aMember and I was wondering if it will still work correctly with ee 2.1?
aMember adds a new member to the ee database, and updates the ee field as to the members group based on the amember subscription status.  Have any of the member fields changed that would make amember not work?

This should cover the first round of questions.  As I get more involved with the revamp I am sure there will be more.  😊

    Thanks,

    Jim.

    Hi, Jim,

Are there any major changes to the templates?

There are some changes.  weblog is now channel; trackbacks and the gallery module are no longer included which may affect your templates.  A template made in EE 1 will need some minor updates to work in EE 2; however, the updater handles those during the upgrade process.  If you’re adapting a template yourself, you mainly need to change weblog to channel.

What are the issues about formating for smart phones?
I assume it will be mostly in setting up templates, is that correct?

Yes, and this is not EE 2 specific

What are the major database changes?

    Yes.

I currently use aMember and I was wondering if it will still work correctly with ee 2.1?
aMember adds a new member to the ee database, and updates the ee field as to the members group based on the amember subscription status.  Have any of the member fields changed that would make amember not work?

aMember, I believe, has an EE 1 plugin; to work with EE 2 the plugin will need to be converted.  If you’re using a custom solution you’ll need to update that to work with EE 2.

Have any of the member fields changed that would make amember not work?

No, but depending on how aMember updates EE - that process will need to change.

    Hope that helps!

    Lisa,

    Thanks for the quick reply.

On the template changes, that is the answer I was looking for, so I know I can go ahead and get started 😊

Could you expand on the smart phones please?

On aMember, I have a support ticket opened, so I will see what they say.
I also suggested to them to think about doing a little modification to their program and make it an EE plugin.  With how well aMember works it would be an awesome e-commerce solution that people have been looking for if it was converted to a plug in to work seamlessly with EE!

    Thanks,

    Jim.

    Hi, Jim,

If you search Devot:ee for ‘mobile’ you should find some add-ons for detection, but other than that it is simply designing templates that look good on mobile devices. You might post a specific thread about that in how to as I know many in our community have tackled that issue.

    Thanks again Lisa.

Sounds like my plan for now will be to design my new templates, then once I get it where I want, get the add-on to detect smart phone.
Then get the info on how to make the phone-templates and re-direct to them when the phone is detected.

    Thanks,

    Jim.
